Our board-certified plastic surgeons and dermatologists can treat submental fullness and permanently reduce fat cells

Kybella™ is a FDA approved for treatment of submental fullness, also called the “double chin.” In a short office visit, this injectable medicine will permanently reduce fat cells in the treated area and provides a non-surgical alternative to neck liposuction to improve the appearance of the double chin. Typically, 2-4 treatments spaced 6 weeks apart are needed to achieve the full effect. Our plastic surgeons were some of the first in the Valley to begin offering the treatment.

How does Kybella work?

Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella™. It is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected in the area of fat under the chin, the deoxycholic acid permanently destroys fat cells in the area. As a result, there are fewer cells that can store fat and fullness of the area under the chin is reduced.

The destruction of fat cells by Kybella™ causes a mild to moderate inflammatory reaction. As a result, patient’s should expect a mild burning pain or numb feeling that is most noticeable for the first few hours after injection. Additionally, swelling, and firmness of the area are likely during the first few days and sometimes weeks after treatment. Mild short term reactions to the needle sticks with redness or bruising are possible. Other more serious complications, like injury to other structures including muscles and nerves in the treatment area, are rare.
